An article by Steve Lohr in the New York Times today said,
In an industry survey, a majority of technology companies candidly said they would not hire anyone over 40.
I was aware of this attitude, but am shocked that so many would openly admit to their discrimination. I'm only 25 years old so it doesn't affect me yet, but I hope this age-ism will change very soon!
My friends Christal and Paul got married recently and registered for black towels with white skulls on them, black and white plates, mugs and table clothes with skulls and skeleton motifs. Before the Makers Faire I went on Etsy to look at similar stuff thinking there would be a lot of skulls there too. What surprised me was a that a search for "skull' produced a considerable number of baby clothes. It seems the hipster babies are wearing little onesies and t-shirts with skulls on them. Now that the trend has been brought to my attention, I see skulls everywhere. Yesterday, in Target we saw these bikinis for little girls. These bikinis illustrate a further trend, which is to pair the cartoony skulls with pink and bows, sort of Hello Kitty meets Death.
E. and I were shopping today. On our way to lunch we saw a (mainly female) crowd waiting for Se7en to sign autographs in the Verizon store. We had lunch 2 stores over from Verizon and watched a couple Se7en videos on my phone. We thought that if the line abated by the time we were done eating we might go get autographs ourselves, why not? While we ate we looked out the window and saw that the line wasn't moving. Periodically the crowd would give a happy scream. Each time we thought Se7en had finally arrived, but it was only in response to the radio station guy yelling "Are you excited about seeing Se7en?" By the time we finished lunch the line was about 3 people wide and a block long, Se7en had not arrived yet, and we didn't have the patience to stay. I'm sure he was very upset to have missed us.
